Fire Cadet/Intern Program

The Cadet program provides young adults with the opportunity to explore careers in the fire service.  Along with giving participants the opportunity for hands-on experience in firefighting and emergency medical care, the program also strives to promote the concepts of teamwork, responsibility and community service.  The program is open to anyone enrolled in high school or college and are considering a career in the fire service.  Although most participants are typically 16-21 years old and are exploring career paths, the program also offers opportunities to older individuals who are considering a career change into the fire service.

The cadet group meets with an advisor twice per month (every other Sunday) for two hours in the early afternoon.

Topics include the basic concepts and essentials of fire and EMS training.  Each cadet is issued their own firefighting gear and uniform shirt for use at the meetings and other functions.

The cadet group is invited to attend several city and fire department functions each year to assist the department and engage in community service.  These events include the 4th of July celebration, National Night Out, the Veterans Day ceremony and Oak Creek Fire Department promotional and swearing in ceremonies.

There are also several off-site training opportunities and competitive events the cadets may attend as well.  We have recently started a ride-along program for the senior cadets who have engaged in the program and show a strong interest in pursuing the fire service as a career.  Invited cadets are able to ride with a dedicated advisor on shift and respond to emergencies with the Oak Creek Fire Department.

The department's Intern Program provides select members of the Fire Cadet group with the opportunity to further advance towards a career in the fire service.  The department supports this opportunity by providing professional education and the possibility for future employment.  During the course of the Intern Program, participants will be exposed to many aspects of being a professional Firefighter with the Oak Creek Fire Department.  Interns have the opportunity to gain first-hand fire service experience by working directly with crews; as well as acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to succeed in the fire service through involvement in department trainings and sponsorship in state certification classes.

The program supports our cadets who enroll in fire service and EMT classes by offering required ride-along time and equipment.

The program has served Oak Creek and surrounding communities for the last 20 years and has opened the opportunity for several individuals who are currently serving as Firefighters and EMT's in Southeastern Wisconsin including the Oak Creek Fire Department.
