Fires originating on patios and balconies can pose a significant risk for occupants of multifamily dwellings.  These fires may not trigger building detection and suppression systems and may spread into apartments and attic spaces before they are noticed.  Abiding by established fire protection standards can help to reduce the potential loss of property and lives due to these types of fires.

The following guidance is issued to assist property  managers and occupants with the local requirements for the use of grills and similar cooking equipment on patios and balconies.

The City of Oak Creek and State of Wisconsin have adopted the 2012 version of the NFPA 1 Fire Code.  This document states:

Cooking Equipment

• No hibachi, grill or other similar devices used for cooking, heating or any other purpose shall be used or kindled on any balcony, under any overhanging portion or within 10 feet of any structure for dwellings over two families.  An electric grill may be allowed if that grill is listed (Underwriter's Laboratories) for outdoor patio use and does not have exposed heating elements.
• No hibachi, grill or other similar devices used for cooking shall be stored on a balcony for dwellings over two families.
• Listed equipment permanently installed in accordance with its listing, applicable codes and manufacturer's instructions shall be permitted.

Property owners and managers may adopt rules stricter than those adopted by the Fire Department.
