Overview

Temporary signs are removable signs intended to be displayed for a limited period of time. Any temporary sign larger than 4 sq ft requires a permit.

What is the application process?

What is the display period?

Sec. 17.0605(a)
Real estate post signs may be displayed for 90 continuous days. Two display periods per property, per calendar year are allowed. Each display period requires a separate permit.
The maximum permitted displayed period for all other permitted temporary signs shall be 14 continuous days.
The Community Development Department may grant a display period extension of up to 30 days. The Plan Commission may grant a display period extension of more than 30 days.
A maximum of three (3) display periods shall be permitted per single-tenant buildings per calendar year. Each display period requires a separate permit.
A maximum of one (1) display period shall be permitted per tenant of multi-tenant building per calendar year.

What size can the temporary sign be?

Ground-mounted signs Sec.17.0605(d)
- The maximum permitted sign area of ground-mounted signs shall be 32 square feet.
- The maximum permitted height of a ground-mounted sign shall be six (6) feet.
Wall-mounted Sec.17.0605(c)
- In any residential district or the A-1, DTS, B-2, B-3, Lm-1, M-1, and P-1 Districts shall not exceed 2.5% of the total area of the face of the wall on which the sign is to be located or 30 square feet, whichever is less.
- In the B-4, B-6, and I-1 Districts shall not exceed 5% of the total area of the face of the wall on which the sign is to be located or 60 square feet, whichever is less.
- No wall-mounted banner sign shall protrude above the highest roofline or above the top of the parapet wall or mansard roof.
Real Estate Post Signs Sec.17.0605(e)
- The maximum permitted sign area of real estate post signs shall be thirty-two (32) square feet.
- The maximum permitted height of a real estate post sign shall be six (6) feet.

What about yard signs?

Yard signs, sidewalk signs, and window signs do not require permits per Sec. 17.0606
The maximum size allowed in any district shall be four (4) square feet
The maximum allowed height in any district shall be five (5) feet
A maximum of two (2) signs concurrently displayed per lot in any residential district
A maximum of one (1) sign concurrently displayed, per lot, in any non-residential or mixed use district
An additional two (2) signs may be displayed within 30 days before any local, state, or federal election and shall be removed with 48 hours after an election

Ground-mounted signs and real estate post signs shall be securely anchored into the ground or secured in a portable base designed for such function.
Ground-mounted signs shall be maintained in good condition and shall not sag, lie on the ground, be torn, or otherwise kept in a disorderly state.
The sign structure of any ground-mounted sign shall be removed at the end of the display period.
